pictures of you...05/01/1989

"I've been looking so long at these Pictures of You
that i almost beleive that they're real
i've Been living so long with my pictures of you
that I almost believe that the pictures are all i can Feel"

from "disintigration", 5/1/1989, track 02

pictures of you
I've been looking so long at these Pictures of You
that i almost beleive that they're real
i've Been living so long with my pictures of you
that I almost believe that the pictures are all i can Feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
asI ran to your heart to be near
and we kissed as The sky fell in holding you close
how i always Held close in your fear
remembering you Running soft through the night
you were bigger And brighter and wider than snow
and Screamed at the make-believe screamed at theSky
and you finally found all your courage to Let it all go
Remembering you fallen into my arms
crying For the death of your heart
you were stone White so delicate lost in the cold
you were Always so lost in the dark
remembering you How you used to be
slow drowned you were Angels so much more than everything
oh hold For the last time then slip away quietly open
open My eyes but i never see anything
If only i had thought of the right words
i could Have hold on to your heart
if only i'd thought of The right words
i wouldn't be breaking apart
all My pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
but i Never hold on to your heart
looking so long for The words to be true
but always just breaking Apart my pictures of you
There was nothing in the world that i
everWanted more than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world that i
everWanted more than to never feel the breaking Apart
all my pictures of you

Sweet Sweet Back...

In 1971, Melvin Van Peebles invented a new flim genre with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song. With the help of the Black Panthers, word of it spread, bringing Hollywood to "the Hood." Van Peebles' son Mario recently released a documentary about the film titled Baadasssss! featuring interviews with Panther chief of staff David Hillard and others. This CD (organized by Hillard and Huey Newton's widow) is a tribute and companion to the documentary, featuring the original title track for the documentary "Getting The Man's Foot Outta Ya Ass," vintage speeches by Panther founder Huey Newton, music by African singer Thomas Mapfumo, new raps and hip hop beats by the Black Panther Fugitives.

Chris Burden

"At 6 p.m. I stood in the doorway of my studio facing the Venice
boardwalk. A few spectators watched as I pushed two live
electric wires into my chest. The wires crossed and exploded,
burning me but saving me from electrocution."

David Bowie wrote this song about Chris Burden:

Joe The Lion

Joe the lion
Went to the bar A couple of drinks on the house an' he said
"Tell you who you are if you nail me to my car"
Boy
Thanks for hesitating This is the kiss off
Boy
Thanks for hesitating You'll never know the real story
Just a couple of dreams
You get up and sleep
You can buy god it's Monday
Slither down the greasy pipe
So far so good no one saw you
Hobble over any freeway
You will be like your dreams tonight
You get up and sleep
You get up and sleep
Joe the lion
Made of iron
Joe the lion
Went to the bar
A couple of drinks on the house an' he was
A fortune teller he said
"Nail me to my car and I'll tell you who you are"
Joe the lion, yeah yeah
Went to the bar, yeah yeah
A couple of dreams and he was
A fortune teller he said
"Nail me to my car tell you who you are"
You get up and sleep
The wind blows on your check
The day laughs in your face
Guess you'll buy a gun
You'll buy it secondhand
You'll get up and sleep
Joe the lion made of iron (repeat ad inf.)

Strange Fruit (Ceuta)
Single slide projection, metal and paper2006

About the work:

The title of the work is taken from the song Strange Fruit most famouslyperformed by Billie Holiday. The song condemns the racism in United States, particularly the lynching and burning of African Americans that wasprevalent in the South at the time when it was written, in 1937.The movement both in time and geography that the work suggest (to the year2006 in the south of Spain), connects the contemporary development of fencesand borders to the origin of the song. Pointing at a new and at the sametime old form of politics, between the different historical moments.

As in a frontier, it is merely a short physical distance between two points in a space,
but meanings and qualities totally change from one to the other.

Guy Fawkes night at Exeter Cathedral

Even in the mid 19th century Protestant feeling and local pride combined in an annual Guy Fawkes night each November 5th. A huge fire was made just outside the Cathedral’s West Front, and the Cathedral Close was packed with spectators. This engraving is reproduced from a painting by F.F. White showing the occasion; smoke billows from the bonfire. Writing in the years after 1900, Edith Prideaux recalled that the West Front of the Cathedral was too hot to touch when the fire raged, and that on mornings following bonfire night the cathedral authorities swept up fragments of medieval stonework which had broken from the fabric. Despite all the dangers to life and property, the custom seems to have continued into the 1860s or 1870s.

"Hatırla, 5 Kasım'ı hatırla!
Barut ihanetini ve komplosunu
Hiç bir neden bilmiyorum ki gerektirsin
Barut komplosunun unutulmasını"

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder, treason and plot,
I see of no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

The phrase "Remember, remember, the fifth of November" is referenced. This is the first line of a nursery rhyme detailing the exploits of Guy Fawkes.

Hope is a good thing / Umut güzel şey

Hope is a good thing / Umut güzel şey

Our goal is to interchange the “übermensch/ superhero/ didactic/ awesome artist” expectations with artists, whose dwell beyond the boundaries of an artist notion squeezed in between a manufacture process totally depended to global artwork evaluation systems. Our aim is to re-read/interpret the existence of the artist as a human- person with manual free art pieces, or to represent them for alternative interpretations.

Under the illumination of these factors, exhibition stands fort as the possibility of facing against repetition of the artist in the hybrid spaces and her imprisonment in only one piece of art or the other plurality of spaces. By these means, exhibition, which put the concept of “hope” under the spotlights, gains its momentum with the prospect to open a new range to focus for the spectators.

The core purpose in here is, by using the range opened trough this exhibition, to interrupt usual theoretical/ academic/doctrinaire identification on work of art; accomplishing this without directing the viewer to only one piece, which is isolated from every other connections. Our goal is to make us reconsider the “artists’ condition” and call the spectator in to homeland of artist and his/her creations.
